Step Number 1 Dealer Surety Bond and Workers Compensation Policy
The State of New York requires you to obtain a $20,000 dealer surety bond if you are Selling 50 or Fewer Vehicles and requires a $100,000 Selling More Than 50 Vehiclesyour The bond must be a surety bond eecuted by an insurance or bonding company authorized to do business in New York,

If you have employees you will have to show the State of New York that you have an active workers compensation policy before the New York DMV will issue you your New York Dealers License. You can contact the State of New York’s Workers compensation Board

Step 2-Federal Tax ID Number and New York Sales Tax ID
Before you apply for a New York dealers license you must obtain a Federal Tax ID Number and a New York Sales Tax Certificate. You can apply for yoru New Sales Tax Certificate by clicking here.

Applying for your Tax ID Number is free, just takes a few moments and can be done at the IRS Federal Employment ID Number page.

Step 4-Building & Lot
You must have a building for your New York dealers license. Your business building must be a permanent enclosed building owned or leased by you, The established place of business must be devoted mainly to the operation of your dealership
You must have heat, electricity and a phone, the State of New York DOES allow a cell phone to serve as your official dealership phone, many states require that you have a landline telephone in order to obtain a dealers license but the state of New York will allow a cell phone

You must have a display lot with room for at least 3 vehicles and you must display this sign permantley mounted to your building. The sign will be included in your dealer starter kit which we will talk about in a moment.

Step 5 Submit your New York Dealer License Application to the New York DMV


Before you submit your dealers license application be sure to gather up the following documents that you will submit with your dealer license application
Surety Bond
Copy of Lease or Ownership Docs
NY Sales Ta ID Number
Proof of Workers Comp
Copy of Drivers License
Receipt For Dealer Startup Kit
Filing Receipt From New York Secretary of State
Fees

Then you will place all the docs into one big envelope with a few stamps and mail it to:

When you submit your application correctly you should receive your New York Dealers license in about 30 days.
